The Challenge: Conducting Research in the World’s Communication Dead Zones


As oceanic research pushes into polar regions, the deep sea, and areas with complex, volatile weather, traditional manned expeditions face unprecedented safety risks and operational hurdles. Navigating ice fields and storm-prone zones is dangerous for crewed vessels, and some areas are simply unfit for prolonged human presence.

The logical solution is deploying fleets of Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). These robotic boats can undertake high-risk tasks like seabed mapping, water sampling, biological observation, and ice monitoring. However, these mission areas are typically far from land, with zero public network (4G/5G) coverage. While satellite communication is an option, its high cost makes equipping every single USV with a terminal prohibitively expensive. The core challenge, therefore, is establishing a reliable, high-speed, local communication network that requires no pre-built infrastructure and can form and maintain itself—a critical linchpin for mission success.


The Requirement: A Robust, Self-Healing Sea Network
Commissioned by a national-level marine research institute, we were tasked with developing a specialized wireless data transmission system for a new research mothership and its USV fleet. The goal was to create a maritime mobile mesh network capable of high throughput, long-range transmission, high-speed mobility, and seamless roaming to support precise, coordinated research in both coastal and distant waters.

The key technical demands were:


1. High Throughput, Real-Time Data Transfer:​ Ensure stable, continuous, low-latency transmission of sensor data and HD video from multiple, rapidly maneuvering USVs back to the mothership command center. Target bandwidth: >50-80 Mbps within a 5 km radius.


2. Multi-Node Collaborative Networking: The system must support a flexible "mothership-USV fleet" formation. Beyond simple point-to-mothership connections, all nodes (the mothership as the command hub and 3 USVs as task units) must intelligently interconnect using various topologies—chain, star, mesh, or hybrid—enabling dynamic data routing and true fleet cohesion.


3. Long-Range & Scalable Communication: Guarantee stable communication of ≥5 km between the mothership and the farthest USV under normal sea conditions. The system must be extensible, with the ability to switch antennas and adjust power/settings to extend ranges beyond 10km and adapt to expanding future mission scopes.


Our Solution: Deploying a Resilient Maritime Mesh


We implemented a network centered on the research mothership, coordinating with three unmanned survey vessels. Each vessel was equipped with SUNTOR's specialized mesh network devices:

 Mothership:​ Installed with a high-power, salt-spray-proof base station unit.
 USVs:​ Fitted with compact, marine-grade communication modules designed for unmanned systems.
This setup created a wireless local area network at sea based on a robust Mesh architecture. Data flows seamlessly between all nodes using point-to-point (chain), point-to-multipoint (star), or multipoint-to-multipoint (mesh) topologies as conditions require. All data consolidates at the mothership, which can then relay critical information via its satellite link to distant command centers on land.

It integrates data transceiving, dynamic routing, and relay functions. All nodes are equal, requiring no central gateway or wired backbone, allowing for rapid network establishment in both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight conditions. It excels in long-distance backhaul, area coverage, and relay applications.
